Roles and Responsibilities
Oversee controls and automation engineering activities for assigned projects.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers and technicians, ensuring their professional development and adherence to engineering standards and best practices.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including process engineers, electrical engineers, and mechanical engineers, to integrate control systems and automation solutions with overall project requirements.
Liaise with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to address control system and automation requirements, provide technical support, and resolve issues or concerns as they arise.
Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and project discussions to provide input, insights, and recommendations on controls and automation aspects of oil and gas projects.
Provide estimating and front-end engineering design support.
Develop/review control system architecture, logic diagrams and control narratives for various project elements, ensuring compliance with project requirements, industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Program and configure distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers and supervisory control and data acquisition systems to implement control strategies, process automation and data acquisition functions.
Conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) for control systems and automation solutions, ensuring proper functionality, performance, and integration with existing systems.
Specific Tasks and Skills:
PLC/DCS Programming & Configuration:
Proficiency in programming and configuring Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) from major vendors (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider Electric, Emerson, Honeywell).
In-depth knowledge of PLC programming languages (Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, Sequential Function Chart).
Experience with DCS configuration, including control strategies, alarm management, and historical data collection.
SCADA/HMI Development:
Expertise in developing and configuring Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems.
Experience with popular SCADA/HMI platforms (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, FactoryTalk View, WinCC).
Ability to create intuitive and user-friendly interfaces for operators.
Instrumentation & Control Systems:
Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation (sensors, transmitters, actuators).
Knowledge of control system design principles (PID control, loop tuning).
Experience with fieldbus technologies (e.g., Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
Network Communication:
Proficiency in industrial networking protocols (TCP/IP, Ethernet, serial communication).
Understanding of network security principles.
Experience with network troubleshooting.
Electrical Systems:
Basic understanding of industrial electrical systems, including motor control centers (MCCs), power distribution, and safety systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
Control System Design & Documentation:
Ability to develop detailed control system design specifications.
Experience in creating and maintaining accurate documentation (e.g., functional specifications, loop diagrams, P&IDs).
Knowledge of control system design standards.
System Integration:
Experience in integrating various automation and control systems.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve integration issues.
P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams):
Develop and review P&IDs for accuracy and completeness.
Ensure P&IDs reflect the control system design.
Shutdown Keys & Interlock Logic:
Develop and implement shutdown keys and interlock logic for safety systems.
Ensure proper documentation of safety interlocks.
Control Narratives:
Develop detailed control narratives that describe the functional operation of the control system.
Ensure control narratives are clear, concise, and accurate.
Network Architecture:
Design and implement industrial network architectures.
Ensure network security and reliability.
Document network configurations.
Functional Safety:
Perform SIL (Safety Integrity Level) calculations.
Design and implement Functional safety systems.
Create safety requirement specifications.
FAT/SAT:
Create and execute Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) plans.
Document all test results.
Commissioning and Startup:
Lead and participate in the commissioning and startup of automation systems.
Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues during startup.
Create commissioning reports.
Change Management:
Implement and manage change control processes.
Document all changes to control systems.
As-Built Documentation:
Ensure all control system documentation is updated to reflect as-built conditions.
Bid Evaluations & Vendor Management:
Prepare technical bid packages.
Evaluate vendor proposals and technical compliance.
Manage vendor relationships during project execution.
Estimation & Proposals:
Develop accurate cost and schedule estimates for automation projects.
Prepare technical proposals for clients.
Risk assessment for project proposals.
Project Management:
Lead and manage automation projects from concept to commissioning.
Develop project schedules and budgets.
Monitor project progress and report on key performance indicators.
Manage project resources and ensure timely completion.
Team Leadership & Mentoring:
Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior and intermediate engineers and technicians.
Foster a collaborative and productive work environment.
Software & Tools:
Microsoft Office Suite software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
Automation Software (Rockwell, Emerson, Honeywell, Schneider, GE)
Knowledge of database management systems (e.g., SQL).
Experience with Virtualization technologies.
Qualifications and Experience
10+ years of experience in related activities as described above.
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a Technology Diploma from a polytechnic institute in Canada or the USA.
Being a member of APEGA or ASET is an asset.
Proven track record of successfully designing, implementing, and commissioning automation and control systems.
Experience in Oil & Gas.
Experience in manufacturing, chemical processing, and water treatment industries are an asset.
Experience with safety systems (e.g. SIL, Functional Safety) is an asset.
Must be effective at time management, and efficient with organization, prioritizing and planning.
Must demonstrate verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to receive and apply constructive feedback.
Possessing adaptability is a must, this role can require self-management, optimism and calmness to be qualified.
Being able to work in a team setting is crucial to this role, must be comfortable with conflict management and resolution, collaboration and coordination.
Candidate must have a strong work ethic, be responsible, dependable and professional always.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must be willing to travel to field and work on-site for project commissioning services. This position is approximately 10% field time and 90% office.
