Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee instrumentation engineering technology activities for the projects, providing specialized expertise and technical leadership to project teams.

  • Provide mentorship and training to junior engineering technologists, sharing knowledge and best practices to support their professional development and ensure high-quality deliverables.

  • Develop and review instrumentation design specs, drawings, and schematics for project components such as control systems, instrumentation loops, field devices, and safety systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project requirements.

  • Participate in the selection, specification, and procurement of instrumentation devices, considering factors such as performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Utilize advanced tools and software to conduct detailed analyses, simulations, and studies to optimize instrumentation designs, enhance system reliability, and improve process efficiency, considering project constraints and operational requirements.

  • Coordinate with project managers and stakeholders to develop project plans, schedules and budgets and monitor progress against recognised targets, identifying deviations and implementing corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, designers, and other stakeholders to integrate instrumentation designs with overall project objectives and ensure seamless integration with other project components.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and proposals, and participate in meetings and discussions to communicate project status, findings, and recommendations effectively. 

  • Review and approve contractor and subcontractor designs, drawings, and deliverables, ensuring adherence to project specifications and standards, and providing technical support during construction, installation, and commissioning activities.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in instrumentation and seek opportunities for professional development and growth in the field.

  • Support construction, installation, and commissioning activities by providing technical assistance, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with instrumentation design specifications and safety standards.  

    Specific Tasks: 

  • Provide input to Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s), including instrument tagging and symbology.

  • Review instrument installations in 3D models and on instrument location drawings.

  • Develop instrument indices.

  • Prepare Instrument datasheets.

  • Complete instrument sizing calculations and selection.

  • Prepare Material Requisition documents.

  • Interface with instrumentation vendors.

  • Evaluate vendor quotations.

  • Perform quality assurance reviews for all types of instrumentation deliverables.

  • Prepare and review shutdown key and cause and effect diagrams.

  • Assist with preparation and review of control narrative documents.

  • Participate in Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) sessions.

  • Assist with construction documents and engineered work packages.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in related activities as described above. Pertinent post-secondary school experience will be considered for applicants.

  • Bachelor of Engineering or Technologist Diploma in Instrumentation. Journeyman Technician ticket with applicable schooling and experience will be considered.

  • Professional Engineering Licence in Canada is an asset.

  • Field experience is an asset.

  • Must be effective at time management, and efficient with organization, prioritizing and planning.

  • Must demonstrate verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to receive and apply constructive feedback.

  • Possessing adaptability is a must, this role can require self-management, optimism and calmness to be qualified.

  • Being able to work in a team setting is crucial to this role, must be comfortable with conflict management/ and resolution, collaboration and coordination.

  • Candidate must have a strong work ethic, be responsible, dependable and professional at all times.
